SUMMARY 2009-2010 “HANDS FOR HABITAT” PROGRAM
During the 2009-2010 school year the “Hands for Habitat” Partnership engaged students in Orange County Schools in an ambitious service-learning project designed to increase awareness of issues surrounding housing and affordability.
The project had three components:
Building: Construction classes from Orange High School built in the Fairview Community of Hillsborough and horticulture classes from Orange High School landscaped a green-certified home designed by an Orange High School
Curriculum: Classrooms at various grade levels throughout the district engaged in educational and service learning activities designed by Habitat for Humanity International or self-designed by our own teachers to focus on housing issues that affect our community and world.
Fundraising: Schools, classrooms and clubs joined with community businesses and organizations to raise $35,000 for the construction of the home. A total of $36,750 was raised.

• Total gifts from the community: $21,750
• Approximate number of students, teachers, parents and community members who have participated in educational, fundraising and building activities: 895 individuals
• Media Coverage: 3 Newspapers, 15 articles
• Orange County Schools currently have 38 Habitat families with 92 children attending Orange County
PLANS FOR 2010-2011
OCS “Hands for Habitat” will be continuing in the 2010-2011 school year thanks to Sports Endeavors who will fully sponsor the cost of the partnership. We are thrilled with the success of the first year of “Hands for Habitat” and we plan to expand this program to all schools in the district.
