SUMMARY 2009-2010 “HANDS FOR HABITAT” PROGRAM

During the 2009-2010 school year the “Hands for Habitat” Partnership engaged students in Orange County Schools in an ambitious service-learning project designed to increase awareness of issues surrounding housing and affordability.

The project had three components:

Building: Construction classes from Orange High School built in the Fairview Community of Hillsborough and horticulture classes from Orange High School landscaped a green-certified home designed by an Orange High School student.

Curriculum: Classrooms at various grade levels throughout the district engaged in educational and service learning activities designed by Habitat for Humanity International or self-designed by our own teachers to focus on housing issues that affect our community and world.

Fundraising: Schools, classrooms and clubs joined with community businesses and organizations to raise $35,000 for the construction of the home.  A total of $36,750 was raised.
